It is expected that teams from all over the US will come to this camp which will feature training sessions and tournaments.

Saturday night (at the same location) will see the official launch of TEAM IRELAND by Mr. Paul Gleason, the Irish Consul General for Ireland. The celebration will include traditional Irish music, song, dance, film, theater and the Gaelic language.  A buffet will be available offering authentic Ireland brown bread and soda bread, smoked salmon, an assortment of jams and other culinary delights.

Sunday will feature an Irish Film and Theater event. For more details please email eiliscrean@gmail.com and check out our website www.aiceworkshops.com. It promises to be a great weekend and we look forward to seeing you there.

*Notes
The Bodhrán
The bodhrán is an Irish frame drum ranging from 25 to 65 cm (10" to 26") in diameter, with most drums measuring 35 to 45 cm (14" to 18"). The sides of the drum are 9 to 20 cm (3½" to 8") deep. A goatskin head is tacked to one side (synthetic heads, or other animal skins are sometimes used). The other side is open ended for one hand to be placed against the inside of the drum head to control the pitch and timbre.

One or two crossbars, sometimes removable, may be inside the frame, but this is increasingly rare on modern instruments. Some professional modern bodhráns integrate mechanical tuning systems similar to those used on drums found in drum kits. It is usually with a hex key that the bodhrán skins are tightened or loosened depending on the atmospheric conditions.

Irish Bouzouki
The Greek bouzouki, in the newer tetrachordo version developed in the twentieth century, was introduced into Irish Traditional Music in the late 1960s by Johnny Moynihan of the popular folk group Sweeney’s Men, and popularized by Andy Irvine and Dónal Lunny in the group Planxty. In a separate but parallel development Alec Finn, later with the Galway-based traditional group De Dannan, obtained a trichordo (three course/six string, or τρίχορδο) Greek bouzouki on his own. With a few exceptions, bouzouki players playing Irish music tend to use the instrument less for virtuoso melodic work and more for chordal and contrapuntal accompaniment for melodies played on other instruments such as the flute or fiddle. Because of this it is common to use matched strings on the two bass courses, tuning to unison pairs in order to enhance the bass response of the instrument.

Celtic Art History Description (lecture/slides)
From the armor and weapons of Bronze Age warriors to the disturbing beautiful, intricate designs of illuminated manuscripts in the early Christian church, to the current revival of interest in Celtic traditions --the spirals, knotwork and zoomorphics of Celtic art have remained a recognizable style. Learn about passage graves, early Bronze Age artifacts, early Celtic tribes of Europe, their lifestyles and uses of art, Roman conquest and its effect on Celtic Art of the Gauls and other Iron Age warrior cultures; early La Tene tribes, illuminated manuscripts, carved crosses in Scotland and Ireland and the effect of Viking raids on the monastic communities which produced them. Finally, we will see examples of the work of several contemporary Celtic artists who are carrying on the tradition

What is the Book of Kells and Why is it Important to the Irish? (lecture/slides)

The Book of Kells is one of the most important treasures of medieval art. An illuminated ceremonial book from the late 8th-early 9th century, it is an encyclopedia of medieval life in many ways. The illuminations and text, begun at Iona off the coast of Scotland and later moved to Kells in Ireland, contain beautiful imaginative art, humor, mystery and incredible technique, sometimes called "the Work of Angels". Artist Cynthia Matyi will share her collection of images from this manuscript and details about its development, preservation and value to the Irish people."
